About this place
When the fragrant aroma of sizzling sauce calls for a hearty meal, teppan griddle cooking hits the spot. At Rugger 15 in Kyoto's Ukyo Ward, the menu is anchored by everyday comfort staples, led by modan-yaki—a savoury okonomiyaki pancake piled generously with fried yakisoba noodles. Substantial and satisfying, it makes for a comforting choice over lunch.
Classic okonomiyaki can be ordered with pork or mixed fillings, alongside aromatic stir-fried yakisoba and bite-sized takoyaki. For days when an extra-large appetite calls, the extra-large yakisoba uses 2 times the standard portion of noodles, while old-fashioned Japanese curry rice offers another satisfying alternative.
Inside, a modest layout of table seating and counter stools makes it easy to drop in solo. Guests can unwind over beer, shochu, or sake in the evening, or linger after a meal over hot or iced coffee and matcha juice, enjoying the hot-off-the-griddle dishes at their own pace.
